guide to home laundering © wrap

No soaking or boiling!
Gone are the days of being chained to the kitchen sink. Modern washing machines wash so well that real nappies do not need to be pre-soaked or boiled

Help the environment
By home laundering you can help reduce the environmental impact of nappies. Use energy efficient washing machines and line dry wherever possible.

Save Money
Home washing costs less than £1/week. For the full story see the “How Real Nappies Save Money” fact sheet.

The DO's

  • Wash nappies 2 to 3 times before using them to improve absorbency
  • Wash nappies at 60oC or lower depending how soiled they are
  • Wash covers (wraps) at 40oC where possible so that they last longer
  • Use quick drying fleece liners and booster nappies
  • Use environmentally friendly detergents where possible
  • Eco Balls used with a small amount of Borax can make your nappies softer. A small amount of white vinegar may also be added in the compartment of the washing machine that would normally contain fabric conditioner.

The DON'T's

  • Boil wash, its unnecessary, time consuming and costs you money
  • Use fabric conditioners. They reduce the absorbency of the nappies.
